The Dead Parrot. This is probably my favorite Monty Python’s sketch from their TV series. And no, I’m not counting the movies here, because those are just way too awesome to compare to a simple sketch. For the Monty-blind, please go to youtube and search for Monty Python… there’s nothing more to say, just watch it.
Anyway, a Greek book written in the 4th century - Philogelos: The Laugh Addict -- was translated and seems to have a joke quite similar to Monty Python’s Dead Parrot (but instead of a parrot, it’s a slave!) and, I must say, would be a brilliant joke to use inside a movie like Life of Brian.
The joke essentially tells the tale of a man who returns a slave that died a few days after it was bought. “When he was with me, he never did any such thing!” was the reply. The 265 jokes in Philogelos are were written by Hierocles and Philagrius, about whom very little is known.
