Michael Palin and Terry Jones will be seeing for the first time the 30-year-old movie Life of Brian in Aberystwyth, west Wales later this month. This is happening because, up until now, the movie was banned from screening in the town theaters.
The ban was made because opponents to the movie claimed that it made fun of Jesus. Monthy Python was accused of blasphemy because the movie tells the story of a Jewish man who is mistaken for the messiah and crucified.
Thirty years later the ban is lifted by the town mayor Sue Jones-Davies who, back then, played Brian’s girlfriend in the brilliantly controversial comedy. Apparently she had no idea about the ban until a “journalist who pointed out to me that the film had never been shown in Aberystwyth because of the ban,” said Mrs Jones-Davies.
I don’t know if you’re a Python fan or if you even ever saw the movie, but this is like Comedy 101 and absolutely needs to be seen at least once in a lifetime!
