GIMP is a graphics editing program that has two great features: it’s FREE and you can pretty much run it on any operating system, which makes it the favorite software of many designers and graphic artists!
Even though GIMP was not designed to replace Photoshop, each release shows us that a LOT can be done with it and that it’s really starting to be an alternative worth considering.
Keeping that in mind Smashing Magazine wrote a very complete article on how to do some tweaking around to get the full potential of GIMP on your computer covering all the main basis: Plug-Ins, Brushes and Filters.
The tips in the article include:
- PSPI Plug-In
- Layer Styles
- CMYK Color Separation
- Liquid Rescale
- Essential Brushes
- Anchor Windows
- Animation Package
- GEGL
Another great free alternative is Inkscape, which is the Open Source Community’s favorite vector editing software and is currently used to create the awesome geek hero comic strips, found here. Inkscape is a great replacement for Adobe’s Illustrator and also has the upside of working on Linux, MacOS and Windows machines!

Actually, Inkscape is meant to “replace” Illustrator / Freehand and no Photoshop.
I actually meant to write that, but forgot!
